ColoredPencils (which means every colors of crayons in the box!),501c3 grassroot organization, were created as the result of ongoing community gatherings among diverse communities who found the need for a space to display and promote various traditional arts and cultures in Portland.
We started by sharing the stories of refugees and immigrants, but have expanded to include many more cultural communities as we see the need to build bridges between communities, break down stereotypes and allow people to witness each others humanity, while promoting a culture of human dignity for all.
Arts and culture have become useful for community development and revitalization by building meaningful emotional bonds. Our project inspires civic pride, connect generations, and bridge diverse groups. More than anything, the significance of community building through the arts is its power to connect people to each other through a symbol of their shared identity and to the place in which that identity was forged.
